Eric J. McNulty
Eric J. McNulty is Associate Director and Program Faculty at the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) at Harvard University. He is an instructor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where he teaches leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Drawing on research in areas from applied neuroscience to psychology to organizational behavior, McNulty has helped leaders navigate transformational change, crisis, and the demands of everyday business.
In addition to his work with the NPLI and the Chan School, McNulty teaches in executive education programs at Harvard Medical School, MIT, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and the University of California/San Diego. He has led executive leadership training programs in North and South America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. He has spoken at conferences and symposia worldwide.
Throughout his career, he has worked with executives from Global 100 companies to startups. He has experience in and with companies from the automotive, aviation, energy, entertainment, healthcare, logistics/supply chain, professional services, retail, and travel industries as well as government agencies and non-profit organizations. He integrates lessons from that broad experience into pragmatic curricula for creating high-commitment, high-performance organizations.
McNulty has a passion for helping shape human-centric organizations where people can contribute to the greatest extent of their potential. His teaching style is inclusive and engaging, creating an environment where participants learn from each other and discover fresh insights for their own leadership.
McNulty is the co-author of You’re It: Crisis, Change, and How to Lead When it Matters Most and the second edition of Renegotiating Health Care: Resolving Conflict to Build Collaboration. He is the author of multiple e-books, more than 200 bylined articles in publications such as Harvard Business Review (HBR), Sloan Management Review, Strategy + Business, Leader to Leader, and others, and numerous academic papers. McNulty is a member of the Leadership Communications Council at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and of the Advisory Board of the Crisis Response Journal and the Future Vision Committee at Disaster Recovery Institute International.
Prior to his time at Harvard, McNulty held management and communications roles in the private sector. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics (with honors) from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Master of Arts degree in Leadership from Lesley University.
An avid birder and animal lover, McNulty is a board member at Massachusetts for Elephants, a Community Advocacy Leader with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and a member of the Council of Advisors at Manomet Conservation Sciences. He also serves as an advisor to the Mental Health Literacy Collaborative.
