Heather Hinton
Heather Hinton, Ph.D., is a 4x CISO, former IBM Master Inventor, and a Lecturer and Board Member for the Cybersecurity master’s degree program at Harvard Extension School, where she actively shapes academic strategy and mentors the next generation of cybersecurity leaders. Leveraging a formidable 25-year career in cybersecurity, including a decade as a CISO, Dr. Hinton operates as an executive-level authority in cybersecurity risk management and governance for global institutions.
She excels at identifying, assessing, and mitigating systemic cyber risks across highly regulated multi-cloud and AI-driven ecosystems, having architected and implemented enterprise-wide security strategies that drive executive alignment and foster accountability across complex organizations. As an instructor, she empowers leaders to make informed decisions, build adaptive security postures, and confidently steer their organizations through evolving cyber threats.
Dr. Hinton is particularly recognized for her ability to ensure robust risk reduction and compliance with stringent global frameworks, such as DORA, NIS2, SEC, FINRA, TKG, HIPAA/HITECH, and GDPR, adeptly navigating and overcoming resistance to critical change within high-stakes environments. Her profound impact and thought leadership have been honored with accolades, including CISOs Connect C100 Winner, induction into the Women in Technology Hall of Fame, and recognition as an IBM Distinguished Engineer. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Security from the University of Toronto.
